About the Event
Kick off the opening season at Possum’s, and welcome Anna Maria, leading Mottola Music Mafia. This dynamic piano trio blends jazz, Latin, rock, and contemporary influences into an engaging musical experience. Anna Maria Mottola is a multifaceted musician, composer, and music director. She has recently retired after 20 years as the White House pianist and is known for her versatility, musical sensitivity, and compelling performances.
Her trio brings together three accomplished musicians whose collective artistry creates a performance that is refined and deeply expressive.
Anna Maria Mottola on Piano
Anna Maria is a multifaceted pianist, composer, and music producer whose artistry spans jazz, Latin, classical, rock, and contemporary genres. Known for her versatility and musical sensitivity, she has collaborated with singers and instrumentalists across styles to create dynamic and compelling performances. A founding board member of the Blue Ridge Center for Music and Creative Arts, she is deeply committed to musical excellence and education in the community. For many years, she has performed extensively in Madison and the surrounding region, sharing her passion through both performance and mentorship.
Kevin Thompson on Double Bass
Kevin is a double bassist from Fairfax, Virginia, with experience spanning orchestral, jazz, and musical theater settings. He earned a Bachelor of Music from Ithaca College and a Professional Studies Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Kevin has performed with the Akron, Canton, and Firelands Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Cleveland Opera Theater. In 2022, he joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, performing at the White House, throughout Washington, D.C., and on national tours.
Emre Kartari on Drums
Emre is a jazz musician and educator with over 30 years of international experience. He has performed with leading artists including David Liebman, Melissa Aldana, Janis Siegel, and Troy Roberts, among many others. Originally from Ankara, Turkey, Emre has played a major role in advancing jazz education there, founding state-funded jazz degree programs and the Izmir International Jazz Camp. He has curated international festivals and projects in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy and Fulbright Association and has taught at James Madison University and the College of William & Mary. He has also served as a juror for the National Endowment for the Arts.
